Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport

A new airport for Berlin has been built in Schönefeld, on the outskirts of the capital city. Despite considerable delays and political turmoil during its construction, the airport is now appreciated by air travelers for its functional clarity and distinctive architecture. At the center of the ensemble is the terminal, the place of greatest intermodality: beneath it lies a train station for longdistance and regional transportation, and the terminal's boldly cantilevered roof spans over the arrivals and checkin areas as well as a viewing terrace. The design follows a strict threedimensional grid that pervades all scales, from the urban configuration to the interior design. This measurement system is based on functional parameters, such as aircraft size and ergonomic heights, and its foundation is a design manual, developed by gmp, that regulates all aspects from material selection to furnishings. The manual visibly anchors the ordering system into the architectural expression, ensuring recognizability and future viability.
