The Wilhelm Kaisen High School is going to have a new campus. With a total of four extension buildings arranged around a large open space, a central, vibrant campus area faced by all the entrances is created. Because of its clear boundaries and central circulation function, this open space will be extremely popular with students and an attractive element for the adjoining residential units. The main extension building contains the new 1,200-square-meter cafeteria at its northwest end and occupies a prominent position on the campus. In the future, it is intended to function as an events venue for the entire neighborhood. The high school itself will be extended towards the southwest along a colonnade with three six-stream classroom clusters totaling 3,400 square meters. The existing dual-purpose sports hall next to the existing building will be replaced by a new 1,200-square-meter building. To the southeast, the plans also include the new 1,200-square-meter Helene Kaisen Elementary School, which will serve four grade levels. Owing to their position on the airport’s flight path, the new buildings have to comply with more exacting soundproofing requirements. Structurally, they have a reinforced-concrete skeleton that complies with the Passivhaus standard. They are finished in red brick to match the color of the facades of the existing school building. Thanks to their modular structure, the cafeteria and new sports hall lend themselves to wood construction.
