As part of the expansion of the A1 highway, the existing Norderelbe Bridge will be replaced by a new bridge structure that gmp designed along with Leonhardt, Andrä and Partner (LAP). Due to its emblematic character and elegant restraint, the public appreciates the existing bridge for its engineering aesthetic. The identification with this bridge designed in 1963 by architects Jux and Freese inspired the team to view the new structure as an “evolution” that enables the bridge to satisfy the new requirements for an eight-lane highway while at the same time remaining true to the spirit of the location.
Visible from afar, the double cable-stayed bridge with its different pylon heights marks the Elbe crossing. The different span widths and pylon heights of the new bridge are the result of the side sections of different widths, so that the asymmetrical terrain of the two river banks is reflected in the structure of the bridge. The eight pylons form a striking portal from any perspective. The highway is embraced both to the right and to the left by the towering supports, which line up along both sides of the fairway when viewed from the water. A pedestrian and bike path that runs parallel to the traffic lanes but is structurally detached from them integrates the crossing into the local recreation area’s system of paths along the Norderelbe and Dove Elbe.
