In the Shekou District in Shenzhen a new quarter is being created from an old fishing harbor. The project is the last component in a comprehensive redesign and expansion of the district situated in the southeast and is part of waterfront park. The guideline for the new complex specified an almost structure-free continuation of the public green space on the first and second floors and a diversion of vehicle traffic underground. The gmp design interweaves architecture and parkland to create a urban landscape: a multistory plinth unites loosely arranged, modular cubes that can be used for multiple purposes. A canyon cuts through the podium diagonally and serves as a central passageway. The interplay between cubes, canyon, and layered levels generates an attractive, shady urban space with staged vistas and views. On the podium, a compact hotel and office tower as well as two slender residential towers continue the composition in a vertical direction.
