The design for Beijing’s Fengtai Railway Station features a seemingly floating roof structure, under which all the general functions of the station are gathered. The cruciform roof based on a regular 21 x 21 meter grid references and forms a contrast to the rounded shape of Beijing South Railway Station. Thus the station architecture responds to the unique urban context created by the elevated tracks to the east and west and large public squares to the south and north. The new railway station opens out in all four directions. Beneath the floating roof, a warm gray terracotta facade links the modern structure to the historic Beijing cityscape. The concept aims to meet the requirements of a highly complex transportation building that harmoniously combines railway and metro tracks on four levels, safety zones, and controlled pedestrian flows with attractive shopping areas that benefit from the large traffic hub.
