In May 2012, the Eurovision Song Contest took place in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku. For this event a significant crystal-shaped building on the peninsula near the city center was designed and constructed within a period of just eight months. Instead of the usual reinforced concrete construction, the building and stands have been designed as a pure steel structure which consists of three independent parts, i.e. the membrane façade, the modular stadium itself and the interior roof. On the folded membrane façade 9,500 LED lights were installed to program different dynamic lighting scenarios. The multifunctional indoor arena could be converted into a football stadium by dismantling of the interior roof, or it can be completely dismantled and re-erected at a different location.
