In Haiku, the capital of the island province of Hainan, a popular tourist destination in the south of China, a new free trade zone is currently being created. The Chinese energy corporation, Sinopec, will establish its new headquarters here. With the planned 150-meter-high office tower, the corporation is able to fulfil its ambition for appropriate representation in the urban context and for high-quality workplaces. With its height and hexagonal shape—with three slightly concave main facades—the tower will become a stand-out building in the city landscape.
Visitors enter the 12-meter-high lobby with conference area above from the west, and from there access the office floors via the central core. To the south, a separate entrance with its own elevators provides exclusive access to the offices on the upper floors.
The three main facades front offices, some of which feature balconies or sky gardens. The three secondary facades are in front of smaller independent functional areas that can be used as meeting rooms, for leisure activities, and for internal vertical circulation. The concave shape of the main facades also serves to provide natural solar screening. In addition, the offices can be ventilated naturally using controllable openings.
The plinth next to the high-rise building accommodates a trade and conference center with exhibition areas, a trade floor, and a multifunctional conference hall. Both parts of the building are connected via a glazed link corridor and a shared basement floor with retail facilities, which opens out to an open-air plaza.
