A Museum for the Liang Sicheng Architecture Prize
On March 20, 2026, the first museum dedicated to the Liang Sicheng Prize opened in China. The country’s most prestigious architecture award will now be presented in a permanent exhibition.
The museum is located in a building adjacent to the former residence of Liang Sicheng and his wife Lin Huiyin in Lizhuang, Sichuan Province, where the couple sought refuge after leaving Beijing during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–45). Both Liang and Lin studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1920s and are now regarded as among the most important figures in Chinese architecture. In the first half of the 20th century, they played a key role in the preservation of historic buildings in China.
The newly established museum features an exhibition space of 500 square meters, presenting the biographies and award-winning works of all recipients of the Liang Sicheng Prize. The prize is awarded every two years by the Architectural Society of China (ASC) and supported by the International Union of Architects (UIA). To date, a total of 27 outstanding individuals from the fields of architecture, as well as architectural theory and education, have received the award worldwide. Meinhard von Gerkan, founding partner of gmp, was awarded the 9th Liang Sicheng Prize in 2019, becoming the first architect from outside Asia to receive this honor. His landmark project—the National Museum of China—is presented in the exhibition through images, models, and videos.
